birthday, CDs, and portland

Yesterday the husband and I took our friend Dan out for the afternoon to celebrate. Not only was it his birthday, but it was also the day that he handed in his letter of resignation (he recently accepted a new position out of state) no more Evil School! We went to Maya Family Mexican Restaurant for lunch followed by an hour at Barnes and a really shitty movie. The food at Maya was, as expected, fabulous (and so was the giant margarita I guzzled). I wasnt expecting Barnes to be so interesting because I was just there the day before but hey, we had an hour to kill so I figured I could find something to do. I ended up in the CD area - someplace I rarely go because they are usually WAY overpriced. However, while perusing the jazz section I found a few CDs that Ive been wanting for a while that were actually priced competitively and one that was even CHEAPER than Ive seen other places. So I bought em all three of em :-) Well, five if you count the fact that two of them were 2-disc sets. Heres what I bought: (One can NEVER go wrong with Miss Vaughn.) (Ive only in the last year or so gotten to know Nina Simone and I just love her this is my first - and certainly not last - CD of hers.) (I never claim to be in the know so maybe everyone knows about her and Im the only one who didnt but I discovered her via iceberg radio a few years and think her voice is GREAT very low, deep, and warm.) This, my friends, is where the fun ends. The food and the CD shopping was IT because the movie TOTALLY BLEW MY ASS!!! I kinda feel like we ruined Dans birthday by making him watch it. I realize that most of my movie reviews turn out like this one from last moth so Ill spare you my detailed opinion. One would think that Id just give up on Hollywood bullshit films already but cmon man, I live in Duluth there is NOTHING ELSE TO DO HERE but watch shitty movies! We were so bored today that we even went to the Duluth website in hopes of finding something to do but there was NOTHING so we just took a nap. Its pretty sad when you live in a city of 90,000 people and the most interesting thing to do on a Saturday is sleep we have GOT to get out of here! And speaking of Living on the west coast would put us on the exact opposite side of the country from most of our friends (and Justins family) and that Pacific vs. Eastern time zone thing would really decrease the frequency of phone calls. But hey, ANYTHING is better than Duluth and hey, living in Portland would put us a mere 4 hours from Dan so its nice to know that well know people no matter which side we end up on... |
