a home of her own

Ive spent several days over the last couple of weeks checking out apartments with my sister. For the past two years (up until late May) she had been living in an apartment with a roommate. This roommate decided to get married and move out of state which left her with three options: 1) place an add for a replacement roommate and hope for the best 2) pay a shitload of money to keep a 2-bedroom apartment herself or 3) move out and look for a new place. She, wisely, opted for number three but only had a couple of weeks to find a place which was going to be extremely stressful and difficult. My parents, in a shocking display of niceness, offered to let her crash at their house in Wrenshall (they live somewhere else from May through October) for the summer so she could have time to really look for a new apartment as opposed to just taking the first thing she could find. I must admit that my sister and I were getting a little discouraged after looking at some rather small and disgusting apartments and the one we had an appointment to see this morning was the last one on the list before having to start all over with a new newspaper and a new list of potential landlords to call. I was supportive and told her that not all apartments are great but that these types of things often have a way of working themselves out and that she might be pleasantly surprised by an apartment soon. Well ladies and gentlemen, we hit the jackpot today! My sister is now the proud occupant of a 3-room studio just two blocks from my house. Her new place is literally 3x the size of some of the others we had looked at this week and she has a kitchen IN A SEPARATE ROOM and HER OWN BATHROOM (believe it or not, one place we looked at actually had a communal bathroom - barf!) and all for well within her budget so shes set for a year! It all happened so fast too! We met the landlord for the tour at 11:00am and by 12:00pm wed already been to their main office and shed signed the lease. Shell be able to pick up her keys on Monday and will start moving in shortly after that (and did I mention that she only had to pay rent for August?). Once shes in and settled Ill see if I can talk her into letting me take some pictures to post for yall. Congratulations on your very first all-by-yourself living space, Rachel (a.k.a. the cute one)!!! |
