The husband and I went to the Omnimax and saw the above film. It was so good! And, because this weekend is the 39th annual something I couldnt give a crap about, the usual $7ea. ticket price was dropped to $4 (a pleasant surprise) as some sort of incentive something or other - hello cheap date! The poster for the movie said... Join the expedition and be the first to travel the entire length of the Nile - the longest river in the world, from source to sea. Face white water rapids, dodge crocodiles and hippos, explore exotic landscapes, view the sacred tombs of Egypt, and understand the cultural links between Ethiopian, Sudanese and Egyptian civilizations. ...which made it sound really interesting but we soon discovered that it didnt even come CLOSE to preparing us for the amazing experience we would have. Nile could have been the most boring story ever and it still woulda been good because its one of those IMAX films with LOTS of movement and who doesnt love sitting in the comfort and safety of an upholstered seat while feeling like youre white water rafting down the nile? Seriously, when I say LOTS of movement, I mean it! There were a couple of times where both the husband and myself started to feel it a little in the stomach and were both more than fine in rough waters on real boats so Nile gets two thumbs up just for that :-) Honestly though, the story was unbelievable - some crazy guy puts together a team of rookies to spend 114 days rafting down THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE NILE?!? What makes a better story than that? They were almost eaten by Nile crocodiles, almost died in a freak overnight wind storm (the dumbfucks thought they could make up for lost time by continuing on at night - bad idea), and get this, they were even SHOT at by crazy bandit guys who have been known to steal supplies and murder people! AH! Really though, I cant say enough good things about it so if it ever comes to an IMAX theatre near you - go! In other news, the husband and I have ANOTHER date tomorrow! WOO! Were going to see Netherlands native Johan Lippens, baritone, and American pianist Brook Cuden perform Winterreise, Schuberts powerful song cycle of intense grief. Were preparing ourselves for an afternoon of pure unadulterated gorgeousity. Im familiar with the cycle in CD form only so thisll be my first live experience - I cant wait! By the way, just because we spend our weekends watching films on the sacred tombs of Egypt, and...the cultural links between Ethiopian, Sudanese and Egyptian civilizations and going to a live performance of Schubert does NOT make us nerds...does it? Or perhaps this explains why we have no friends here... |
