Last night Justin and I made our very first, but certainly not last, sushi. We made nigiri style sushi using ahi tuna. There was a lot of we involved right up until the eating part because I dont eat fish (raw OR cooked) nor do I eat any rice that isnt a flavored variety from Rice-A-Roni such as this. On Saturday we went to the Oriental Grocery downtown and were able to pick up of all the necessary ingredients for sushi save for the fish. The guy working in the store was super helpful and gave us the name of the only fish place in the area that sells sushi grade ANYTHING. Yesterday morning I called to confirm that this place DID have sushi grade fish (just tuna) available and then in the afternoon we went up there to buy some. Im not sure why, but for some reason I was expecting sushi grade tuna to be expensive but it wasnt we got almost 5oz. for less than $4.00! In fact, I think Justins entire (huge) sushi meal was less than a value meal at some junky fast food place - not to mention about a million times healthier. I also, for some reason, thought the sushi was going to be very hard to make seeing as Id never even made rice in a pot before. I thought Id totally screw it all up and end up serving my husband a messy looking plate of rice with bits of tuna but it was actually pretty easy to turn things like this, this, this, and this into this just by reading this Of course I also had this and this which helped a great deal because who knew that making sticky rice had so many steps? Steps that included things like using a cookie sheet to fan it off so it would cool quickly. Once I was done with the rice and Justin was done with the fish I was able to do this:
Once the above scene was completed my husband was able to do
this and finally this
which made me very happy because I know that sushi is Justins favorite food. Besides, when I can make a meal that I know he loves and it turns out well it makes me feel like Im being a good wife. And if I wasnt a good wife before last night I most certainly am now... |
