you've got mail

Sure weve all got an email address - or two, or three, or more. But you know what we all DONT have? Gmail. Well, unless youre me in which case you have it and think its pretty fucking cool. The Glamslam and I were testing out my new Gmail account today (Ive had it for awhile but just never got around to trying it out until this afternoon) and so far I think its FABULOUS. My favorite features so far (aside from the 1GB of space you get - all for free btw) are the keyboard shortcuts that allow me to do things like hit c to compose a new message and the way messages are received - Ill try my best now to explain... Lets say youre cool enough to receive an email from me, then you reply, then I reply, then you reply, then I reply, and then you reply again. With old school email accounts like Hotmail or Yahoo I would have three emails from you with the same subject - each email would have an Re: added to it. Gmail is FAR too cool to have all that clutter - heres what it does (this is genius btw): it keeps everything as one message in my inbox! I click on it and it opens everything at once and displays it as a conversation that looks not all that unlike a conversation on AIM. With each reply from you a number is added so instead of having three email messages from you on the same subject I have one email message that lists the parties involved (me and you) and the number of total correspondences - six. Once the message is open it displays a lovely timestamp with the added convenience of saying two minutes ago (or however long ago it was since you sent the last reply) and saves me the trouble of having to do math. Ive only been using my Gmail for a few hours now and realize that its still in the testing phase (which is why you cant just sign up for an account because you want one - you need an invite link from someone who already has a Gmail account and was bestowed the power of invite links) but so far I think its pretty fucking cool... |
